BCI launches webinar series exploring the role of lead batteries in the global market

Tue, 11/09/2021 - 10:22 -- Paul Crompton

Not-for-profit association Battery Council International (BCI) has launched a series of webinars that will address the role of lead batteries in supporting the transition to electric vehicles.

The first briefing, ‘Critical Minerals & Supply Chains for U.S. Energy Storage’, will discuss the role of metals and minerals for a low carbon future in the US and internationally.

Part of the talk will include an examination of the closed-loop manufacturing system that keeps 130 million lead batteries out of landfills each year and supplies recycled lead to manufacture new batteries.

Roger Miksad, executive vice president at BCI and Dr. John Uhrie, vice president, exploration, research and technical development for The Doe Run Company, will host the fist webinar.

The webinar content is designed to highlight ways to meet US energy storage needs through domestic resources, and why supply chains, manufacturing infrastructure, minerals and battery innovation are essential to meet these goals.

The information is being offered on demand to make it accessible to viewers at a time and place of their choosing.

Dr. Uhrie said the low carbon future was coming, and a variety of minerals are central to this low carbon and renewable energy future, especially the global battery market which is worth about $90 billion, but by 2030 could be $150 billion
