Utility Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has begun construction of a 409MW/900MWh lithium-ion battery to accelerate the retirement of aging natural gas units at a power plant in Florida, US.
The FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center (MESC) is part of a modernisation plan that is expected to eliminate more than one million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
This system, which will be charged by an existing, solar power plant, will increase the predictability of solar
MESC is expected to commissioned in the later part of the year.
The solar-powered battery system will accelerate the retirement of two 1970s-era natural gas units, which will have their 1,638 megawatts of capacity
