NREL team reports magnesium-metal battery research breakthrough

Scientists at the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) say they have discovered a new approach for developing a rechargeable non-aqueous magnesium-metal battery.

In a proof-of-concept paper published in the journal Nature Chemistry, the research team said they have pioneered a method to enable the reversible chemistry of magnesium metal in the noncorrosive carbonate-based electrolytes and tested the concept in a prototype cell.

Singapore to host solid state research joint venture

A new $20 million batteries research lab is being set up in Singapore to study how innovative nanomaterials could be used to produce “safer and more efficient” batteries.

The lab, jointly financed by Canadian utility Hydro-Quebec and the NanoBio Lab of the Singapore-based Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), which will be housed in Singapore’s biomedical research hub— Biopolis.

US team’s “design overhaul creates true lithium-air battery”

Researchers in the US say they have designed a new “true” lithium-air battery that works in a natural air environment and can still function “after a record-breaking 750 charge/discharge cycles”.

The team from Chicago’s University of Illinois and the Argonne National Laboratory performed an “architectural design overhaul” of the battery tech for its design— which is reported in a paper published in the journal Nature.

Researchers hail “proton battery breakthrough”

Researchers in Australia have unveiled a working prototype of a “proton battery” that they say could eventually overtake lithium-ion as a more powerful and sustainable alternative.

The Melbourne RMIT University team said potential applications for the proton battery include home energy storage devices charged from solar panels and electric vehicle charging.

US military to test “improved liquid metal battery”

An improved liquid metal battery that researchers say has the potential to retain 99.4% of its capacity even after 10 years of continuous use is to undergo testing by the US military.

Materials chemistry professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Donald Sadoway (right), who led the research, told BBB studies showed improved performance after replacing the battery’s traditional ceramic membrane with titanium nitride steel mesh.

Li batteries “can be charged five times faster”— UK study

Researchers in the UK say they have developed “precise” testing technology that shows existing automotive lithium-ion batteries can be safely charged five times faster than the current recommended charging limits.

The team led by Dr Tazdin Amietszajew (pictured) of the University of Warwick’s Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) said the technology works in-situ during a battery’s normal operation— without impeding its performance.

Eaton team moves into NREL

Power management company Eaton and the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have entered into a cooperative agreement to place 15 members of Eaton’s Research team at NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility in Golden, Colorado.

“This first-of-its-kind agreement for Eaton and NREL is an exciting next step in our long relationship,” said Ramanath Ramakrishnan, Eaton’s executive vice-president and chief technology officer. “We will be able to substantially accelerate the innovation process. This infrastructure, combined with Eaton’s ability to mitigate the risks associated with early-stage technologies, will help us more efficiently translate ideas into next generation solutions.”

Solid-state research gets UK battery funding nod

New research into solid-state batteries has won a share of a GBP42 million ($59.8m) UK government grant to help accelerate the development of electric vehicle technology.

The research, to be conducted by an academia-industry partnership led by the University of Oxford, is one of four projects chosen for the funding through the Faraday Institution— launched last year as part of the government’s wider industrial strategy.

Global energy storage ‘set to soar’

The global energy storage market is projected to soar to more than 300GWh by the end of 2030 from “a meagre starting point” of less than 5GWh last year, according to a new report.

Analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) estimated $103 billion will be invested in energy storage over that period.
