Akasol IPO to expand battery investments

German battery manufacturer Akasol is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO)— and has its sights set on acquisitions buoyed by “strong growth” in the electric vehicle (EV) market. 

The Darmstadt-based company, incorporated just 10 years ago, said its lithium-ion battery systems business has already amassed orders worth EUR1.45 billion ($1.7bn) through to 2024, with clients including Daimler, Alstom, Bombardier and Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Akasol cylindrical battery ‘boosts driving range’

German battery manufacturer Akasol has unveiled its first cylindrical-cells battery system with very high energy density which it claims can boost the driving range of plug-in hybrid commercial vehicles “by more that 60%”.

The AKAModule 60 CYC battery system was in the spotlight at last week’s Battery Show Europe in Hannover.

Akasol launches Li battery systems plant for buses

German battery manufacturer Akasol has launched production of its high-performance lithium-ion systems for commercial vehicles at its new EUR10 million ($11.7m) plant in Langen, near Frankfurt.

Akasol started production on 16 November at the 600MWh capacity facility. The company said it has already secured contracts to supply its battery systems for 10,000 buses being built by two European bus manufacturers in the next few years.

New plants and partner for AKASOL

German battery manufacturer AKASOL is partnering with Norwegian company ZEM to develop lithium-ion batteries for maritime use, one month after its announcement of a large-scale expansion of its production capacities.

The first joint product, AKAZEM 15 OEM, is a self-contained modular battery unit designed for workboats, fishing boats and small passenger ferries.

MTU Friedrichshafen builds partnership with AKASOL

Two German firms are set to combine diesel and lithium-ion technology to deliver battery based hybrid propulsion systems.

The joint development brings together diesel engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen and advanced lithium-ion battery system firm AKASOL.
