Innolith looks to inorganic electrolyte to boost lithium for grid-scale storage

Newly-formed European company Innolith has said it is on course to bring its inorganic “non-flammable electrolyte” to market within two years, to supercharge the performance of conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Innolith was launched two months ago after acquiring the core technical assets of Alevo in Germany and Switerland, which went into insolvency.

Alevo firms file for bankruptcy in US

Two US subsidiaries of Alevo, the Swiss-based grid-scale lithium-ion energy storage group, have filed for bankruptcy as a result of insufficient finance and production challenges.

Alevo USA Inc., and Alevo Manufacturing Inc., filed chapter 11 petitions on 18 August in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Fossil fuel veteran joins lithium-ion ESS firm Alevo

Grid-scale lithium-ion energy storage firm Alevo has appointed fossil fuel veteran Peter Heintzelman as its group chief financial officer.

Heintzelman will provide financial expertise including strategy, systems and corporate governance, risk identification and management to the Swiss-based start-up.

Energy storage firm Alevo appoints new CEO

Grid-scale lithium-ion energy storage firm Alevo has appointed Per Dybwad as chief executive offier to serve alongside founder and executive chairman Jostein Eikeland.

The move splits the role of chairman and CEO previously held by Eikeland, with Dybwad now leading the executive team, initially focusing on the company's manufacturing and commercial development.

Alevo's currently empty factory in Concord, North Carolina

Alevo, a hitherto virtually unknown Swiss firm, cut the ribbon on a 4m sq ft lithium-ion battery cell/module manufacturing plant in Concord, North Carolina on 28 October.

Hyped in mainstream media as a “revolutionary” lithium-ion battery, Alevo’s cells are based on standard lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), albeit with an inorganic gel electrolyte containing sulphur dioxide and a conductive fluorosulphinate salt that is thermally stable, non-volatile and flame resistant.
