Amazon recalls Li-ion power bank chargers

Amazon has recalled around 260,000 of its own-brand lithium-ion power bank chargers amid warnings that the battery can “overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards”.

The recall came after the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said there had been 53 reports of the China-made power banks (pictured) overheating in the US— including one report of chemical burns due to contact with battery acid and four reports of property damage, including fire and smoke damage.

Romeo Power woos investors for storage start-up

California energy storage start-up Romeo Power— which boasts a workforce including “top engineers and designers” from business rivals Tesla— has secured $30 million in seed financing.

Romeo said on 24 August it was now pushing ahead with the installation of a fully-automated 113,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Los Angeles that is set to be ready by the year’s end.

Fuel cell firm transformed by Amazon deal

In a move which may send shock waves through the traditional motive power lead acid market, Plug Power, the Latham, New York, fuel cell manufacturer, has signed a multi-year contract with internet retail giant Amazon that includes the opportunity for Amazon to buy up to 23% of Plug Power.

Amazon will begin using Plug Power’s fuel cells to power its industrial equipment, including forklifts, in 11 of Amazon's fulfillment centres this year.

Amazon in dock over alleged battery safety breaches

The trial of online shopping giant Amazon has begun in London as it faces charges of breaching safety regulations as it prepared to transport lithium-ion batteries by air.

A court in the UK has heard how the retailer allegedly readied loose lithium-ion batteries—for consumer products—for transport across Europe without the correct markings.
