Aquion to deliver sodium microgrid battery system to Hawaii

US energy storage developer Aquion Energy is to provide a 1MWh battery as part of a private off-grid solar PV microgrid at the Kona coast on the Island of Hawaii.

The Aquion Energy’s Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI) battery will be the world’s biggest privately owned battery and connected to a 176 kW solar PV array. The system is designed to generate 350MWh per year. The application will be installed at private residential estate Bakken Hale.

Aquion secures yet more funding

US sodium battery manufacturer Aquion Energy (Aquion) has received $36.8m in a series E venture finance round.

The Pennsylvania-based maker of sodium batteries for grid storage will use the investment to support customer-facing resources, scale-up production and expand the manufacturing facility.

Battery and energy storage VC investment sees small quarterly rise

Companies in the battery and energy storage space received $99m of venture capital in ten deals in Q3 2014, according to a report by a US consultant.

Mercom Capital Group said venture capital invested in Q3 was slightly up overall compared to the $90m from six deals in Q2. Top deals included the $25m raise by Powin Energy.

US energy storage developer Greensmith adds Aquion, ViZn to battery portfolio

US energy storage developer Greensmith has added Aquion’s aqueous sodium-ion and ViZn’s zinc redox flow batteries to its product portfolio.

Aquion produces 1.5kWh S10 Battery Stack units, as well as an 18kWh system that combines twelve of its S10 units. The Pittsburgh-based firm claims a price point of $250/kWh.

Aquion Energy adds Tom McDaniel to board of directors

US sodium-ion battery developer Aquion Energy has elected energy industry expert Tom McDaniel to its board of directors.

McDaniel currently works as director and chairman of the board at smart grid and energy management company Tendril Networks and as director of solar energy firm SunPower. He also works for SemGroup, On Ramp Wireless and Cypress Envirosystems.

Siemens in tie-up with Aquion to develop microgrid, energy storage systems

Siemens Industry and Aquion Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to integrate its battery and drive technologies to develop microgrid and grid energy storage systems.

The companies will test the integration of Aquion's AHI (‘Aqueous Hybrid Ion’ saltwater electrolyte chemistry) and Siemens' Sinamics S120 drive technology. As part of the MoU, Siemens acquired an initial set of Aquion batteries for immediate shipment to their manufacturing and test facility in Alpharetta, Georgia, US.
