Australia consortium to capitalise on battery boom

A federal- and industry-backed consortium will be established in Western Australia to position the country as “a global leader in the manufacture and supply of batteries.”

The AUD135 million (US$97m) Curtin University-led ‘Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre’ (FBICRC) includes 58 industry, government, and research partners.

The Australian federal government has committed AUD25m to support the FBICRC’s development, following a $28 million commitment from partners. Western Australia’s state government seeded the bid with AUD6m.

German state aid for batteries not enough to replace private investment, says minister

German state investment to establish a ‘home-grown’ battery cell industry cannot replace the need for “entrepreneurial commitment”, the country’s economy minister has said.

Federal economic affairs and energy minister Peter Altmaier (pictured) said: “We can only subsidise a part of the costs— the lion's share must be raised by the industry itself.”

Leclanché to contribute ‘breakthough’ tech to German battery consortium

Leclanché is working on a “breakthrough technology” that could be rolled out as part of its contribution to a government-backed battery cell consortium in Gemany, BEST Battery Briefing (BBB) can reveal.

Leclanché CEO Anil Srivastava (pictured) told BBB research and development work was already under way, but he said details could not yet be revealed, other than to say the technology was “within lithium”.
