Battery system coupled with wind farm to aid research

Mon, 11/19/2018 - 00:00 -- Hugh Finzel

A new lithium-ion battery energy storage facility connected to a wind farm in northern Germany has started operations as part of a research programme.

The BESS, connected to the Curslack wind farm, comprises 24 second life batteries originating from BMW electric vehicles.

The facility provides 720 kilowatts of output and 792 kilowatt-hours of storage capacity and is integrated with five wind turbines to “enable practical research to be conducted into the possibilities for the system integration of renewable energies”.

BYD initiates energy storage in Poland

Mon, 10/29/2018 - 00:00 -- Hugh Finzel

Chinese batteries and automotive manufacturer, BYD, has started operating its first energy storage project in the Polish market— a system that it was “actively invited” to supply.

The 1.26 megawatt / 2.52 megawatt-hour lithium-ion system, operated in partnership with Polish firm ML Systems, will be coupled with a 1MW solar PV power plant— also produced and sold by Shenzhen-based BYD— to enable peak shaving and to create a more balanced network.

BESS market set to grow tenfold

Fri, 07/29/2016 - 16:48 -- Vic
BESS market set to grow tenfold

The global battery energy storage system market (BESS) is expected to grow by almost ten times by 2020, according to a GlobalData report.

The sector is predicted to grow from 1.5GW in 2015 to 14GW. The main driver of the growth will be the increased share of renewable energy in the power sector and lower production costs in battery systems.

Many global BESS projects are expected to start in the near future as more wind and solar sources are being merged into power grids increasing the need for storage systems like CAES and flywheels that use electro-mechanical technology and batteries and super-capacitors based on electro-chemical technology, and pumped hydorelectric storage (PHS).
