Plans to build a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in India moved forward this week with a memorandum of understanding to invest INR49 billion ($690 million) signed between a Japanese joint venture and the state government of Gujarat.

Automotive Electronics Power Private Ltd. (AEPPL)— jointly owned by Japanese firms Suzuki Motor (50%), Toshiba (40%) and Denso (10%)— plan to build a lithium-ion battery production facility in Hansalpur, in the state’s Ahmedabad district.

Chinese-Turkish venture eyes 25GW battery plant for Turkey

Turkish technology giant Zorlu has signed a partnership deal with Chinese private capital firm GSR Capital that paves the way to building a 25GW capacity battery manufacturing plant in Turkey for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Zorlu will invest a total $4.5 billion in the project by 2023 – the year in which the plant is to be commissioned.

Daimler plans EV batteries plant in Alabama

Daimler is to build a new battery manufacturing plant in Alabama for its Mercedes-Benz subsidiary— which has confirmed it is to start making electric vehicles in the US.

Daimler said construction of the one million square-foot battery plant in Tuscaloosa— the group’s fifth such facility worldwide— is set to begin in 2018.

China-US firms invest in Beijing batteries project

Chinese carmaker BAIC Group and US-owned Chinese battery firm Funeng Technology (Ganzhou) are to invest a total of CNY10 billion ($1.2bn) to launch a batteries plant for new energy vehicles in Shunyi, Bejing.

The Shunyi district government said it has given the go-ahead for BAIC and Funeng to manufacture battery cells and battery packs with an annual production capacity of 8GWh.
