Is Eco-Bat’s market teasing lead-acid battery the industry’s greenest yet?

The lead-acid battery industry likes to push the PR line that it is one of the most recycled products on the planet at around 96%— but the battery’s reusable material currently sits at around 65%.

That was until UK headquartered Eco-Bat developed a 12V flooded battery made from 92% recycled materials, including the lead and acid electrolyte.

Chinese EV battery firms told to meet new rules or lose subsidies

China has announced it will only give state subsidies to Electric Vehicle battery makers who qualify for listing in a new directory.

Only firms that meet certain criteria will be included in the directory, which will go live in July 2017.

The criteria include agreeing to undergo extended inspections in which tests could be carried out on batteries and systems to ensure they and the facility are “consistent with the vehicle battery industry standard conditions... in addition to the scale of production and other aspects of the requirements” that were released in 2015.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s lead-acid battery problems destroying industry’s green credentials

A damning report about battery recycling in Africa lays waste to the lead-acid industry’s claims that regulations are making it environmentally better and safer than lithium-ion.

The findings, from The Lead Recycling Africa Project, have found lead poisoning is severely under-reported in sub-Saharan Africa, where 800,000 tonnes (8% of annual world production) is made available each year for recycling.

Singapore firm invests in Indian lead-acid manufacturer

Singapore firm invests in Indian lead-acid manufacturer

Lead-acid battery newbies Greenvision Technologies has secured an $8million (Rs 52 crore) investment from a Singapore-based venture fund company.

The Indian start-up — which only entered the battery industry three years ago—  gained the funding from Vintage Energy & Resources.

Based in Bengaluru, Greenvision Technologies was founded by Biju Bruno and Atul Mehta to research, design and manufacture AGM and Gel VRLA batteries.

Bruno said: “Our battery business is a new one, and we got there because we discovered that the market potential is huge for batteries, especially in emerging sectors like solar and electric vehicles.”

The firm’s manufacturing facility is based at Hosur in Tamil Nadu. It sells its products under the brand name Relicell, exports its products to the middle-east and Africa and has filed five patent applications.

Relicell batteries are tested and certified by leading laboratories including CPRI (Central Power Research Institute) and ETDC (Electronic Test & Development Centre).

The company recently launched a maintenance-free gel-based battery for home inverter applications, and back in January launched a battery for India’s growing e-rickshaw market.
