Other carmakers can use clever TREV

The technology driving the new electric supercar from China-based Techrules could be made available to other carmakers, the company says.

Techrules’ Ren – on show this weekend at the Concorso d’Eleganza car spectacular on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como (Villa d’Este, Cernobbio, 26-28 May) – is powered by the research and development company’s Turbine-Recharging Electric Vehicle (TREV) system. This innovative technology teams an electric motor and 25kWh-capacity battery with a diesel-fuelled turbine-recharging system to power prototypes past the 200mph mark.

€300M ($327.5M) boost in NMC production

€300M ($327.5M) boost in NMC production

Global materials technology and recycling group Umicore plans to invest €300 million ($327.5 million) between 2017 and 2019 to further increase its production of NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) cathode materials for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.

The Brussels-based company says demand for its NMC materials from electric vehicle manufacturers is outpacing the market and the increased capacity will enable it to cater for a surge in orders. The investment in its plants in South Korea and China will also enable the company to meet growing demand for its proprietary high-energy LCO (lithium cobalt oxide) cathode materials used in high-end consumer electronics.

War threat halts battery production?

War threat halts battery production?

The threat of conflict on the Korean Peninsula is being cited as the reason why a collaboration between a Chinese EV car maker and SK innovation has ground to a halt.

But the real reason the suspension of all operations at the Beijing Electronic Holding & SK Technology Co., Ltd. (BESK) is more likely to be protectionism and not retaliation for South Korea’s decision to deploy the US made THAAD anti-missile system.
