China’s slowdown hits the domestic lead acid sector

Boston Power to scale up li-ion battery production

US lithium-ion battery maker Boston Power is to ramp up its battery production at the company’s Chinese manufacturing plants in Liyang and Tianjin.

The Boston-headquartered firm plans a 5-fold production capacity increase at the Liyang plant by 2016 as well as a production scale-up of up to 4GWh per annum by 2017 and 8GWh by 2018 at the Tianjin plant.

BCI and China BIA form lead-acid battery partnership

BCI and CBIA partner to represent the lead indiustry together

The US Battery Council International (BCI) association and the China Battery Industry Association (CBIA) have teamed up to jointly represent the interests of the lead-acid industry.

“Because BCI and CBIA’s members comprise 70% of the lead-acid battery manufacturing companies in the world, this partnership will create a unified voice for the industry and allow both associations to better serve their members,” said Mark Thorsby, executive vice-president of BCI.

Samsung and Sungrow partner for energy storage JV

Samsung SDI is to form a joint venture (JV) for energy storage systems with inverter manufacturer Sungrow in China.

The JV will develop lithium-ion battery energy storage, as well as marketing and sales of its storage solutions and products. The South Korean and Chinese companies plan to establish new firm in the first half of 2015.

Midtronics expands Chinese headquarters

US battery management and testing company Midtronics has expanded its Chinese headquarters facility in Shenzhen.

The extension of the Shenzhen facility is aimed to meet the demand of the growing battery market in China and to broaden the technical focus on advanced battery applications with production, system installation and deployment as well as fostering partnerships in mission-critical stationary power applications.

Leoch expands South Asian lead-acid operations

Chinese lead-acid battery maker Leoch International Technology (Leoch) has invested $9m in its Sri Lankan factory in order to expand in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The $9m investment is the first phase of further spending on Leoch’s Southern Bata-Ata facility. The company plans to invest $20m at a later stage. The Sri Lankan factory manufactures batteries for uninterruptible power supplies.

China considers to fund recycled lead producers

The Chinese government is considering setting up a fund to subsidise lead producers using recycled lead-acid batteries.

Zhang Weiqian, analyst at research firm Antaike, said the government is likely to give the subsidies to large companies and well-equipped processors that are not running at full capacity.

A123 sells cathode material manufacturing assets to Johnson Matthey

Michigan-headquartered lithium-ion battery maker A123 Systems has sold its Chinese cathode materials manufacturing facility to chemicals company Johnson Matthey.

A123 Systems retained the ownership of its intellectual property and will maintain its research and development capability of battery materials and to further develop improvements of its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) formulation.

Global lead consumption growth forecasts revised down on falling Chinese battery demand

Global lead consumption will grow less than expected due to a slowdown in demand from Chinese lead-acid battery manufacturers, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

The EIU sees global lead consumption at 3.1% in 2014/15, down from an earlier estimate of 3.6%, primarily due to China continuing to destock lead battery supplies, emission monitoring is tightened and further outdated capacity is closed.

Highpower HEV/PHEV lithium-ion battery gets Chinese bus approval

Chinese lithium and nickel-metal hydride battery developer Highpower International has received final product approval for its 20Ah lithium-ion battery.

The high-density battery is designed for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Highpower International aims to supply the battery to the bus transportation industry.
