CATL plans $1.98bn IPO for domestic battery sites

Chinese lithium battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) is planning a CNY13.12 billion ($1.98bn) initial public offering to expand its automotive battery business.

CATL said in a Shenzhen Stock Exchange announcement the move will ensure the firm keeps pace with the rapidly-expanding electric vehicle and energy storage markets.

‘EU needs Airbus-style consortium’ for batteries

The EU’s energy chief has called for the creation of a Europe-wide consortium to support the battery industry— to prevent the EU “falling behind” in the race with China and other nations to power electric vehicles (EVs).

Maroš Šefčovič (pictured), the European Commission vice-president responsible for the ‘EU energy union’, said the bloc should invest in an “Airbus for batteries”— a consortium that he said could do for batteries what the European multinational does for the aircraft industry.

China’s CATL ‘plans Europe battery plant’

Chinese lithium-ion battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) is to open a production base in Europe, according to state media.

China’s Xinhua News Agency said CATL is “planning to build a new plant in Europe to meet the rising demand of the continent” for electric vehicle batteries.

Glencore ‘in triangular lithium deal’ with China’s CATL and VW

Switzerland-based mining company Glencore has reportedly signed a deal to supply cobalt materials to a Chinese lithium battery manufacturer – who would in turn sell batteries for Volkswagen’s (VW) electric vehicles.

According to Reuters, the deal would see Glencore sell up to 20,000 tonnes of cobalt products to CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd), a China-based battery giant who also supplies EV batteries to carmaker BMW.

Mining firm digs battery tester

Brisbane-based mining minnow Graphitecorp is buying the rest of Novonix, a battery testing equipment provider based in Canada.

Graphitecorp, which is developing a graphite mine in western Queensland, Australia, bought two-thirds of Novonix in March. Now it has agreed to buy the remaining third from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), a lithium-ion battery maker in China. The deal is due for completion on 1 June.
