Opportunities for EFB, bi-polar and AGM batteries despite forecast lead to lose market share

Advanced lead battery technologies will see a rise in demand during the next five years despite the chemistry losing some of its market share to lithium-ion, according to a forecast made during Battery Council International (BCI) virtual conference.

Ray Kubis, chairman of Gridtential Energy, made the prediction during his five-year forecast for batteries in transportation applications during the BCI event on 27 April.

German lead battery maker Moll blames sales drop caused by coronavirus for insolvency after 75 years

German lead-acid battery maker Moll Batterien has opened insolvency proceedings after 75 years of operation due to the “sudden, massive, and permanent” decline in sales caused by the corona crisis.

The 75-year-old company applied to the Coburg District Court for the opening of insolvency proceedings on Monday, 30 March. The company made EFB, AGM and VRLA starter batteries for automotive applications, and had recently launched a 12.8V lithium iron phosphate battery.

Johnson Controls, Amara Raja sign India battery tech deal

India’s Amara Raja Batteries and Johnson Controls (JCI) have signed a technology collaboration deal to introduce “a new wave” of advanced battery technologies” to India.

The companies said they will expand their 20-year partnership “to share and improve product design and manufacturing technologies enabling higher performance across starting, lighting and ignition, enhanced flooded batteries and absorbent glass mat batteries.

EFB takes the European start stop market as Moll announces new partnership

Moll, the family-owned lead battery maker based in Germany, with notable up market customers including Porsche, has announced a strategic partnership with Metair - the Johannesburg-listed automotive supplier which already owns European battery maker Rombat in Romania and Mutlu in Turkey.

Moll also has a partnership with Chaowei in China which commenced in 2014 and the German firm has already supplied 4 million batteries to that nation.

Continental adds EFB and AGM starter batteries to portfolio

Continental VDO's EFB and AGM batteries

Germany’s automotive supplier Continental has launched enhanced flooded batteries (EFB) and absorbent glass mat (AGM) lead-acid batteries through its VDO brand.

The batteries are developed for vehicles with start-stop systems. The VDO battery portfolio includes nine different EFB and AGM batteries, targeted at the central European market.
