ESS eyes African power market for all-iron flow batteries

All-iron flow battery system manufacturer Energy Storage Systems (ESS) has outlined plans to expand into the African market, targeting microgrid and utility-scale projects.

Oregon-based ESS has become the first flow battery manufacturer to join the US-backed Power Africa programme, which works with governments, agencies and private companies to develop power-generating infrastructure in electricity-starved sub-Saharan Africa.

Battery investment boost for Moixa

UK-based residential energy storage firm Moixa has secured a total of £2.5 million ($3.2 million) in new investment towards its goal of creating “a virtual power plant and aggregating the capacity of 100,000 home batteries”.

The lion’s share of the investment, £1.5 million ($1.9 million), has come in equity investment including £500,000 ($649,000) from Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) and a further £500,000 ($649,000) from venture capital investment firm First Imagine Ventures.

Expert report highlights ‘increasing value’ of storage systems

Europe’s policymakers have been urged to consider “updating” power market frameworks to allow storage systems to compete in providing “secure supplies of affordable electricity at the lowest costs” to consumers.

According to a new report by the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) – ‘Valuing dedicated storage in electricity grids’ – dedicated electricity storage “has historically had a relatively minor role in the management of Europe’s electricity networks”.

Development of energy storage technologies holds the key to the UK moving from fossil fuel electricity generation to renewable sources.

Investment must be made in research, demonstration projects and development of next generation low carbon technologies, stated Dr Jenifer Baxter, head of Energy and Environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
