Tesla forms battery R&D firm in China

Tesla has formed a new company in China for the research and development of batteries and energy storage devices, according to authorities in Beijing.

The new company has been named Tesla (Beijing) New Energy R&D Co Ltd, with a registered capital of $2 million, according to a document filed with the Chaoyang branch of the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce. The document is listed in China’s National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System index.

Bank mulls first battery storage investments plan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is reviewing how it invests in the energy sector— which could see it financing battery storage projects for the first time, BBB can reveal.

The bank is working on a blueprint to update its existing ‘Energy Sector Strategy’ (ESS)— approved four years ago and which did not even mention battery storage.

India ‘poised for $3bn energy storage investment’

India’s expanding energy storage market is poised to attract more than $3 billion in new investments over the next three years, according to a new study by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA).

The IESA said the bulk of the investment is expected to go into setting up two to four Gigafactories for the manufacture of advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Global energy storage ‘set to soar’

The global energy storage market is projected to soar to more than 300GWh by the end of 2030 from “a meagre starting point” of less than 5GWh last year, according to a new report.

Analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) estimated $103 billion will be invested in energy storage over that period.

IEA to review ‘lithium only’ battery storage analysis

An international study into the potential of batteries to power energy storage systems and electric vehicles of the future is to be reviewed, after it was admitted that research focused purely on lithium-ion.

According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2017 report, “in recent years, the momentum behind battery storage— and lithium-ion batteries in particular— has increased significantly”.

CATL plans $1.98bn IPO for domestic battery sites

Chinese lithium battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) is planning a CNY13.12 billion ($1.98bn) initial public offering to expand its automotive battery business.

CATL said in a Shenzhen Stock Exchange announcement the move will ensure the firm keeps pace with the rapidly-expanding electric vehicle and energy storage markets.

Another 100MW lithium battery for South Australia

Australian energy company ZEN Energy has approved a 1GW renewable energy plan to meet industrial needs of South Australia, including a 100MWh lithium-ion battery facility at Port Augusta.

The company confirmed the battery will be built near the now closed Northern Power Station, and will be plugged into the 275kV Davenport grid connection. The battery itself is said to cost around AUD100 million ($77m) and would be operational in the first quarter of 2019.

Hubei to host China’s “largest flow battery”

Beijing-based energy storage firm Pu Neng has been awarded a contract to provide what it said will be “China’s largest flow battery” as part of a pilot energy storage project.

A 3MW/12MWh vanadium flow battery will be installed in a 10MW/40MWh at the battery demonstration facility as the first phase of integration with a photovoltaic system to supply the grid in Zaoyang, Hubei Province.

China set for energy storage sector boost

China has announced plans to support a “transformation” of its energy storage industry over the next decade— focusing on the development of an array of technologies including a pilot high performance lead-carbon capacitor battery system.

The national government said it wants to move existing R&D and development activities in the energy storage sector onto full-scale commercialisation.
