New markets and better batteries to drive Pb growth in Africa

The lead-acid market in Africa is expected to grow by just over 5% CAGR to more than US$1 billion by 2021, according to a report by market analysts Transparency Market Research.

The continent’s lead–acid market will be led by global manufacturers Exide Technologies, Dixon Batteries, First National Battery, EnerSys, and Johnson Controls, predicts the company in its report Lead Acid Battery Market Report 2018-2026.

Enersys to expand thin plate pure lead, commercialise bipolar

US-based lead-acid battery maker Enersys is to invest an additional $100 million to expand its thin plate pure lead (TPPL) capacity.

The company said the increased capital expenditure over the next three years— “combined with an expected 15% increase” from its focus on “lean manufacturing principles”— should increase its proprietary TPPL capacity by more than $500m annually.

Enersys extends reach into lithium with new motive power battery

US-based lead-acid battery maker Enersys has continued its push into the lithium sector by expanding its range of ‘NexSys’ motive power batteries.

Enersys said it is set to introduce advanced lithium-ion technology to the Nexsys line of high-performance motive power batteries with the launch of Nexsys ion this year.

The company said its expanded range will encompass superior thin plate pure lead (TPPL) and lithium-ion batteries “to offer a full spectrum of intelligent and flexible power options’ FOR electric material handling vehicles.

Enersys completes Alpha Technologies acquisition

Lead-acid battery maker Enersys has completed a US$750 million deal to acquire Canadian firm Alpha Technologies.

Enersys president and CEO David Shaffer said the finalisation of the deal, unveiled last month, creates the only fully-integrated DC power and energy storage solution provider for broadband, telecom and energy storage systems.

Advanced lead ‘reliable and competitive for storage’

Advanced lead batteries are proving an “effective energy storage and distribution option” for projects including frequency regulation, wind and solar generated electricity and local energy grids, an international conference was told.

Battery expert Dr Geoffrey May told the Energy Storage Global Conference in Brussels new developments in lead battery technology, including reduced sulfation, are enhancing performance in shallow cycling.

ALABC joins Argonne Lab for next-gen lead batteries study

Lead-acid battery technology is to undergo a “high-tech makeover” under a research agreement between members of the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC) and the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory.

Fourteen ALABC members have signed up for the science programme, which Argonne said would focus the lab’s “resources and expertise on improving the performance of lead batteries, to assist the industry in meeting market demands for existing applications and for new applications”.

The nine full members of the programme include Crown Battery Manufacturing Company, Doe Run Resources Corporation, East Penn Manufacturing Company, EnerSys, Exide Technologies, Johnson Controls, NorthStar Battery Company, RSR Technologies and the Trojan Battery Company. The five associate members are Superior Graphite, Microporous, Cabot Corporation, Borregard Lignotech and Advanced Battery Concepts.

A “large-scale battery” research lab is being set up in Wales with the backing of key industry players.

The University of South Wales has been awarded GBP995,000 ($1.3 million) to invest in the project at its Power Systems Laboratory in Treforest.

Sustainability award for EnerSys

EnerSys has been honoured for its work in battery recycling and environmental preservation.

The US-based company was awarded a 2016 Leaders in Sustainability Award from the non-profit Call2Recycle Inc., which champions a battery recycling programme that encourages consumers to recycle batteries at nearly 30,000 drop-off points across the US and Canada.

US battery manufacturer EnerSys will supply lithium-ion cells and batteries valued at over $60 million to multiple space agencies and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) worldwide. 

Quallion LLC, an EnerSys subsidiary, will manufacture the lithium-ion raw materials and 72Ah large format battery cells at its production facilities in California.

Enersys wins military order

Enersys wins military order

Lead acid battery maker EnerSys said it was recently awarded a long-term, US$71 million contract for production and supply of batteries used by all branches of the U.S. military in combat and tactical vehicles, as well as generators.

EnerSys will be supplying Thin Plate Pure Lead Hawker ARMASAFE Plus batteries for three years with an option for two additional years with the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).
