Keppel stakes claim to batteries in deal with Envision

Singaporean conglomerate the Keppel Corporation is buying into the lithium-ion batteries business with a US$50 million minority stake in Shanghai-based energy group Envision.

Keppel, whose businesses include infrastructure, offshore and marine and asset management, said its investment will “deepen our insights into the fast-growing electric vehicle market”.

Envision investment deal for 'advanced' China NCM plant

Shanghai-based energy group Envision has confirmed plans to build "the world's most advanced" nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM 811) battery production line as part of an investment and cooperation agreement with US-based investment firm Sequoia Capital.

Envision, which agreed a deal to become the majority owner of Nissan’s international lithium-ion batteries business in 2018, said the manufacturing facility in Wuxi, in China's Jiangsu Province, will produce "high-safety, high-energy density and high-endurance power batteries" with an eventual annual production capacity of some 20 gigawatt-hours.

Nissan selling batteries unit to China’s Envision

Shanghai-based energy group Envision has agreed a deal to become the majority owner of Nissan’s international lithium-ion batteries business.

The definitive agreement with Envision comes just two months after Nissan’s proposed sale of the business to Chinese private equity firm GSR Capital fell through.
