EU launches investigation into finances surrounding LG Chem’s Poland lithium-ion gigafactory.

The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation into the finances surrounding Korean lithium-ion battery maker LG Chem’s gigafactory in Poland.

An investigation has been launched to assess if €95 million ($112 million) of public support granted by Poland to the Korean company is in line with EU rules on regional State aid. 

The cash was earmarked for investing in the expansion of battery cell production facility for electric vehicles in Biskupice Podgórne in the Dolnoślaskie region, Poland.

European Commission funds research into hybrid VRFB energy storage system

The European Commission is backing plans by scientists in Russia to develop a hybrid energy storage system combining a vanadium flow battery and supercapacitor.

During the next three years, researchers at Moscow’s research institute Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) will work on the HyFlow energy storage system.

European Commission approves €3 billion fund to support battery industry

The European Commission has approved a €3.2 billion ($3.5 billion) fund to promote the research and development of a battery ‘ecosystem’ in Europe.

Seven European countries will receive funding to develop cooperation, accelerate laboratory-to-market innovation and introduce a ‘fit-for-future’ regulatory framework.
