Saft invests in electrolyte expansion in France

French company Saft, the battery subsidiary of fossil fuel giant Total, has started work on a €9 million ($10m) project to expand its electrolyte manufacturing site in Poitiers, western France.

The 1,800 square metre facility, expected to start operations next year, will initially double the site’s annual production capacity to 1,000 tonnes, Saft said.

Fossil fuel veteran joins lithium-ion ESS firm Alevo

Grid-scale lithium-ion energy storage firm Alevo has appointed fossil fuel veteran Peter Heintzelman as its group chief financial officer.

Heintzelman will provide financial expertise including strategy, systems and corporate governance, risk identification and management to the Swiss-based start-up.

Development of energy storage technologies holds the key to the UK moving from fossil fuel electricity generation to renewable sources.

Investment must be made in research, demonstration projects and development of next generation low carbon technologies, stated Dr Jenifer Baxter, head of Energy and Environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
