LG Chem in batteries joint venture with China’s Geely

South Korea’s LG Chem is setting up a joint electric vehicle batteries business with Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

Each company has invested around US$94 million in the 50-50 joint venture, which, by the end of 2021, will produce 10GWh of EV batteries annually for the Chinese market.

Daimler-BAIC to build Beijing battery and car plant as Geely takes Daimler stake

German auto giant Daimler is investing in a second battery and car production plant in Beijing with its Chinese state-owned automobile partner BAIC.

Daimler told BBB the companies would jointly invest more than CNY11.9 billion ($1.9bn) in the new facility at their Beijing Benz Automotive (BBAC) joint venture making lithium-ion batteries and “high-quality premium vehicles” for Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz brand.

Daimler silent on Geely ‘battery tech buy-in’ report

Daimler is staying mum on a report that Chinese carmaker Geely has bought a stake in the German peer with a view to partnering on battery tech for electric vehicles.

According to Reuters, sources believe Geely, which owns Volvo, “is keen to access Daimler's battery technology and wants to establish an electric car joint venture in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province”.

Swatch countdown to launch EV batteries for China’s Geely

Swiss watchmaker Swatch expects to get the green light for its newly-developed car batteries to be used in electric vehicles made by Chinese automaker and joint-venture partner Geely next year, according to a report.

Swatch confirmed earlier this year its Belenos Clean Power subsidiary had begun testing its prototype vanadium pentoxide cathode battery technology under an agreement with Geely.
