Chicago utility ComEd orders two 19.8MW energy storage systems

Renewable Energy Systems Americas (RES) has received a contract from Chicago utility Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) for two 19.8MW energy storage systems.

The battery storage sytems will be connected to the local ComEd electric grid to provide real-time frequency regulation service to the PJM ancillary services market. Each unit will store 7.8MWh.

Aquion secures yet more funding

US sodium battery manufacturer Aquion Energy (Aquion) has received $36.8m in a series E venture finance round.

The Pennsylvania-based maker of sodium batteries for grid storage will use the investment to support customer-facing resources, scale-up production and expand the manufacturing facility.

Toshiba 2MW lithium titanate battery to be installed in UK distribution grid

The UK's University of Sheffield will connect a Toshiba 2MW lithium titanate battery at an energy storage research test facility located at a primary substation owned by Western Power Distribution.

The battery will form a part of the 11kV Grid Connected Energy Storage Demonstrator, which is part of Western Power Distribution’s network. Toshiba will supply the lithium titanate battery to be connected to Willenhall substation near Wolverhampton later this year.

Tesla integrates batteries with PV systems

Tesla and SolarCity make storage a priority

Tesla Motors has teamed up with PV installer SolarCity to make a smart battery system for use with solar installations that will automate when energy is drawn from the PV system, the grid or the battery.

The system is called DemandLogic and allows businesses to reduce peak usage of electricity from the grid. The system would also provide backup power during blackouts and maintains grid stability.
