Hybrid liquid air system to rival batteries

A hybrid Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) system is being developed to respond to grid frequency events within one second.

The system – designed and developed in the UK by Highview Power Storage – has been awarded funding of GBP1.5 million ($1.9m) from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency.

Giant UK battery launched to tackle challenges in energy storage

A project to connect a lithium titanate battery to the grid proves the UK is gradually catching up with the rest of the world when it comes to adopting energy storage to balance grid frequency at the utility scale.

Research at the facility, the first to use a lithium titanate battery, which is made up of 21,120 cells supplied by Toshiba, will be led by the University of Sheffield (UoS).
