Fossil fuel giant IndianOil buys into energy storage industry with share boost in metal-air firm Phinergy

Government owned IndianOil has upped its stake in Israel metal-air battery company Phinergy as the fossil fuel firm looks to “embrace emerging alternatives”.

Both companies are in the process of forming a joint venture in India for collaboration on aluminium-air battery system for e-mobility and stationary applications.

Fast charging ability along with energy density is part of the holy-grail of battery technology, typically difficult to achieve with standard lithium-ion technology due to temperature rise, safety and cycle life degradation.

However, StoreDot believe they have the answer. As part of a technology demonstration in London, UK, hosted by Israel firm's strategic partner on 7th November, BP, the company demonstrated the full charge of an electric two-wheel vehicle in five minutes.

US and Israel Cooperate on Clean Energy

The US Department of Energy (DoE) and Israel’s Ministry of Energy (MoE) have together selected seven clean energy projects, to which they will grant US$6 million under the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Energy programme.

Qualifying projects must involve one US and one Israeli company, involve energy-related innovation, and be of mutual interest to both countries. At least half of the project costs must be contributed by the companies’ involved themselves.

UltraCharge targets military with pouch cells joint venture

Israel-based lithium and flow battery developer UltraCharge is set to jointly manufacture its high voltage lithium-ion battery pouch cells in Indonesia with domestic lead-acid firm PT Garda Persada.

Under the terms of the deal, Australia-listed UltraCharge will also market and distribute the pouch batteries with Persada— which will hold a 70% stake in the joint venture.

Chinese-Israeli venture for aluminium-air batteries

Israeli metal–air batteries company Phinergy plans to team up with Chinese partners to invest in the development of aluminium-air battery systems in China.

Chinese aluminium products manufacturer Yunnan Aluminium said it had formed a joint venture company with Phinergy and China’s Shanghai Zuoyong New Energy Technology for the CNY813.8 million ($128.6m) project.

IndianOil in aluminium-air battery tech tie-up

India’s state-owned IndianOil Corporation has signed energy technology tie-up deals with Israeli companies— including one developing aluminium-air battery systems.

New Delhi-headquartered IndianOil signed letters of intent with startup Phinergy and the Yeda Research and Development Company, a technology transfer company, in Israel, last week.

Additives boost lead-acid performance by 30%

Israel scientists have discovered adding single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) on a lead-acid battery’s electrodes can improve its performance by more than 30%.

Researchers from Bar-Ilan University have found that electrodes containing SWCNT give prototype cells a greater specific capacity, improve cycle-life, have a lower resistivity, and a higher rate capability.
