Planned Kenyan recycling plant will regenerate lead batteries for ‘half-price’ re-sale

Plans to establish a recycling facility in Kenya to prevent the illegal dismantling of lead batteries are moving forward thanks to Betrilyf Solutions, a subsidiary of civil construction firm Avcon Contractors.

The facility at Athi River Township will ‘regenerate’ old batteries with the addition of ‘additives’ before being sold as second-hand at a cost of up to 50% less than new batteries.

UK firms to light up Africa with repurposed lithium-ion batteries

Cells from solar lamps are to be reused to make batteries to power homes in Kenya following a partnership between lithium battery firm Aceleron and UK firm Total Access to Energy Solutions (TATES).

The first stage of the project will see Aceleron convert TATES waste lithium-ion battery cells into reusable battery packs for off-grid applications across Kenya and the surrounding area including Benin, Rwanda and Libya.

Lead-acid battery plant opens in Kenya

Kenyan battery firm Associated Battery Manufacturers (ABM) has opened a plant capable of producing lead-acid batteries.

The Sh600 million (US $6.56million) maintenance free (MF) battery manufacturing plant on was officially opened on February 17.
