Kokam deploys ‘high energy’ BESS systems in South Korea

South Korean battery company Kokam has been selected to provide photovoltaic-connected battery energy storage systems for two projects in the country.

Kokam will deploy its high energy lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (HE NMC) battery technology for the projects, which total 40 megawatt-hours (MWh) of BESS capacity.

The storage systems are needed for renewable capacity firming and energy time shifting, Kokam said.

SolarEdge to acquire majority stake in Korea’s Kokam

US energy tech firm SolarEdge Technologies is to acquire a majority stake in South Korea battery manufacturer Kokam, ahead of plans to take full control of the company.

The acquisition of around 75% of outstanding equity shares of Kokam reflects an aggregate investment of approximately US$88 million, including related transaction expenses, SolarEdge said. 

The deal is expected to close in the coming weeks and SolarEdge plans to buy the remaining outstanding equity shares of Kokam— with the aim of Kokam becoming a subsidiary.

Kokam has introduced the K-UPS series of high power Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) battery racks featuring Kokam's Ultra High Power Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (UHP NMC) battery technology.

The switch to lithium is based on growing data centre demand for lithium-ion UPS systems that can deliver high power for a short period of time at a lower cost than UPS systems using lead-acid batteries, the company claims.

Korea’s Kokam supplies battery storage for Australia mining

South Korea battery manufacturer Kokam has supplied a 30MW lithium-ion battery storage system to support mining operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

Australian electricity retailer Alinta Energy said the system— said to be the country’s largest battery for industrial applications— has been installed at its 178MW gas-fired Newman Power Station. The station supplies power to remote mining operations in the Pilbara region.

The XPAND battery pack is the result of four years R&D and product development, and features advanced battery technologies including a ceramic separator and battery pack thermal containment technologies.

Kokam partnership secures MWs of benefit for Korea

Battery firm Kokam has secured a deal to supply a 13MW/h lithium-ion energy storage system (ESS) to aid frequency regulation to one of South Korea’s biggest utility companies.

The 36MW project will use the South Korean firm’s Ultra High Power nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and NANO battery technology.
