RSR invests in cleaner smelting technology

Lead-acid battery recycler Revere Smelting & Refining Corporation (RSR) has installed a $55 million system to reduce metallic particle emissions at a third US plant.

The installment of the Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP) system brings emissions at its Middletown, New York, plant to around 25 pounds per year.

No change on backyard lead issue— or its solution

The lead industry has reacted strongly to a controversial news article in last Wednesday's Guardian newspaper (25.10.2016) which highlighted the issue of the backyard battery recycling industry as one of the top 10 worst polluting problems in low and middle-income countries.

The World's Worst Pollution Problems, published by NGOs Pure Earth and Green Cross Switzerland on Tuesday, reveals the top 10 most polluting industries in low and middle-income countries.

Chinese lead player Sacred Sun puts big money into lithium

As Chinese interest in the burgeoning domestic new-energy vehicles and energy storage business hots up, one of the major lead-acid battery manufacturers in China, Sacred Sun announced recently it has put aside 0.85billion RMB (US$125M) for acquisitions and mergers with appropriate companies in the lithium ion supply chain.

The first investments are in SHIHLIEN APEX Huai’an and Yancheng (Jiangsu Province) Co. Ltd.—businesses which were founded in 2012.  Their main activity is in motive power lithium ion battery manufacture. The current production capacity is 150 million Ah/year.

Saft to replace substation lead-acid batteries with nickel cadmium

Battery maker Saft has been awarded the contract to supply its maintenance-free nickel cadmium backup battery systems to Brazil’s capital city.

The French firm will replace existing lead-acid batteries at all 34 of Brazilian power utility CEB (Companhia Energetica de Brasilia) distribution substations serving Brasilia.

Grid-scale storage to use lead-acid technology

A 300kW lead-acid and ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system is being deployed in Ireland using Australian firm Ecoult’s UltraBattery technology.

It will be the first time Ecoult’s UltraBattery has been used in Europe.

The system will be deployed at South Dublin County Council’s (SDCC) Tallaght Smart Grid Testbed and be used to integrate fast-response storage with Ireland’s DS3 electricity grid.

Revolution begins for 12V and 48V bi-polar lead-acid batteries

Lead-acid batteries that could revolutionise 12V and 48V vehicle applications are being made after Integral Technologies completed the manufacture of its bi-polar plates.

Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC) is using the plates in its lead-acid bi-polar batteries, with ‘several’ due to be produced containing multiple variations of its plate design and construction.

Abertax and Accumalux announce cooperation deal at ELBC

Maltese-based firm Abertax Technologies and Luxembourg’s Accumalux Group have signed a co-operation agreement aimed at giving customers a one-stop lead-acid components service.

Abertax inaugural award presented to lead association ALABC

An award to celebrate the people and organisations doing ‘remarkable’ work in the lead acid industry was launched by Malta-based battery ancillaries firm Abertax during ELBC15.

The inaugural award and €20,000 was handed to the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC) representative Boris Monahov, the consortium’s program manager.

Firm attempts to usurp lead with LiFePO4 battery launch

Battery manufacturer Accutronics is targeting the traditional markets occupied by lead-acid with its replacement lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4) technology.

The UK company’s Ultralife battery is designed for the security, medical and defence applications that currently use sealed lead-acid batteries.
