Swiss battery firm Leclanche has signed a deal to provide six energy storage systems to provide grid stabilisation for Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Swiss battery firm Leclanche has signed a deal to provide six energy storage systems to provide grid stabilisation for Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in the Canadian province of Ontario.

The company will provide the systems with a combined capacity of 13MW/ 53MWh after signing a deal with the grid operator valued at $50 million to $75 million.

Leclanché will team up with Deltro Energy Inc. who will procure, design and construct the site facilities balance of plant scope and high voltage connections to the grid.

Deltro will operate the facilities and Greensmith Energy will provide the energy management system, when the projects come on line at the end of the year.

David Del Mastro, CEO of Deltro, said: “We have asked Leclanché to deliver these storage systems on a turn-key basis and will work closely with them to ensure this project is successfully constructed and fully integrated into the IESO grid”.

Leclanche plans to begin installing the batteries in April or May 2016.

The contract with IESO functions as a power purchase agreement for three years, with electricity distributor Toronto Hydro Corp. taking over the agreement for an additional 12 years.

Swiss battery firm Leclanche announced a world first for its lithium-ion titanate battery after signing a deal to supply systems for street light applications.

The deal with Octo Energy, in Saudi Arabia, is one of two major new contracts for Leclanche’s Speciality Battery Systems Business Unit.

Swiss firm clocks up second energy storage buy out within weeks

Swiss firm Leclanché has bought module and battery management system software know how from its partner as it positions itself as a complete battery-based energy storage company.

The lithium-ion cell and separator company has bought German IT firm ADS-TEC’s design and IP rights after years of working together on state-of-art modules, BMS and master control systems.

Leclanché to supply lithium titanate batteries for Swiss energy storage project

Leclanché is to supply 500kWh of lithium titanate (LTO) batteries to store electricity at a 2MW solar PV park in Switzerland from next year.

The Swiss firm's batteries form part of a 2m Swiss franc ($2.2m) research project led by the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) to study storing solar energy and subsequently be able to distribute it in an optimal way at times of peak consumption during the day, often called ‘time-shifting’.
