Lithium-ion battery fires spark global recall of 68,000 EVs amid over charging concerns

The root cause of fires that pushed General Motors to recall 68,667 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles is unknown but “could be” related to overcharging the high voltage lithium-ion batteries produced in South Korea by LG Chem. 

Concerns the batteries could catch fire when fully charged has led the US federal vehicle safety agency National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recommend charging up to 90% capacity until a software update is completed.

EV start-up locks down lithium-ion battery supply from LG Chem

Electric vehicle start-up Lucid Motors has signed a long-term partnership deal with lithium-ion battery supplier LG Chem.

Full production of the US firm’s Lucid Air is expected to start in late 2020 with LG Chem’s battery cells being used in the standard versions of the EV through 2023.

Energy storage firm Eguana and LG Chem expand partnership

Canadian firm Eguana Technologies has augmented its energy storage partnership with Korean lithium-ion battery giant LG Chem.

Eguana has begun integrating LG Chem’s JH3 cell technology into its AC Battery energy storage system (ESS) portfolio.
