Jam tomorrow promises on lithium safety

The small but highly influential battery safety meeting in Bethesda Washington heard when it comes to travel, lithium-ion is definitely taking the slow route to the west.

50% more energy into Li-ion batteries?

The Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) claimed that using pure Silicon anode in lithium-ion battery cells is capable of increasing the energy density by 50%.

The new technology is commercialised by ECN’s spin-off company LeydenJar Technologies BV, and plan to set up a demonstration plant in the next two years.

Self-healing Li-ion batteries have been developed in China

Chinese scientists have used carbon nanotubes to develop a thin, flexible lithium-ion battery that can heal itself after breaking, according to reports by Angewandte Chemie.

The battery has self-healing abilities, which even after completely breaking apart, can grow back together without significant impact on its electrochemical properties.

Chinese lead player Sacred Sun puts big money into lithium

As Chinese interest in the burgeoning domestic new-energy vehicles and energy storage business hots up, one of the major lead-acid battery manufacturers in China, Sacred Sun announced recently it has put aside 0.85billion RMB (US$125M) for acquisitions and mergers with appropriate companies in the lithium ion supply chain.

The first investments are in SHIHLIEN APEX Huai’an and Yancheng (Jiangsu Province) Co. Ltd.—businesses which were founded in 2012.  Their main activity is in motive power lithium ion battery manufacture. The current production capacity is 150 million Ah/year.

New Anode Material is found to improve batteries performance

A Korean research team claimed they have developed a new type anode material that will greatly improving the performance of commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), a public university in South Korea has proved the possibility of a next-generation hybrid anode using silicon-nanolayer-embedded graphite/carbon.

UK lithium-ion battery materials company Nexeon has opened an office and development laboratory in Hakusan High-Tech Park, Japan.

Nexeon Japan K.K. has opened the office on the Hakusan High-Tech Park in Yokohama to have greater access to Nexeon’s ‘key target markets’ in the electronics and automotive sectors.

Battery first for motorbike OEM in deal with Tokyo start-up

Japanese battery maker ELIIY Power Co is to supply its lithium-ion starter battery to an International motorbike OEM.

The company’s HY93 lithium-ion motorcycle starter battery will replace lead-acid technology in fellow Tokyo-based Honda Motor Co for use in its CBR1000RR Fireblade SP/SP2 sport bike.
