Siemens to partner with Northvolt for ‘Green LIB’ supplies

Siemens is to partner Swedish lithium-ion start-up Northvolt in developing “next generation Green lithium-ion batteries”.

Siemens is investing EUR10 million ($11.6m) in the partnership— through which it will become the latest international firm to work with Northvolt— whose planned lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility is being financed by the European Investment Bank.

Siemens Gamesa tests redox flow ‘BESS hybrid’ in Spain

A vanadium redox energy storage system is being tested in Spain by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) as part of a hybrid renewables project.

SGRE said the next-generation redox flow battery at its La Plana test site near Zaragoza offers a 120-kilowatt energy output with 400 kilowatt-hour storage capacity.

China tightens grip on lithium in Chile deal

China’s Tianqi Lithium is set to become a key shareholder of the world’s second largest producer of lithium— in a move to strengthen Chinese influence on the battery raw materials market.

Tianqi has agreed to buy a 25.9% stake in Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM) from Canada-based Nutrien in a deal worth more than $4 billion.

Chicago’s cops get batteries backup

Lockheed Martin is to provide a 2MWh GridStar lithium energy storage system for a microgrid project in Chicago.

The Bronzeville community microgrid project, funded by the US Department of Energy, features a lithium-ion BESS coupled with solar photovoltaics to serve as backup power for critical facilities— including the Chicago Police Department.

Crash probes in US, Europe, highlight lithium fires

Lithium-ion batteries continue to be in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons— the latest being fatal crashes and fires in the US and Europe.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has confirmed it is investigating a crash involving a 2014 Tesla Model S in Florida, which was “reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a wall resulting in a post-crash fire”.

Marubeni plans Li-batteries tie-up with Northvolt

Japan’s Marubeni Corporation has become the latest Asian player vying for a stake in Europe’s evolving battery cells business through a deal with Swedish lithium-ion firm Northvolt.

Marubeni and Northvolt have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate, in a move that could see the Japanese conglomerate supply LIB manufacturing equipment and raw materials.

CATL ‘signs EV batteries deals with Daimler, Hyundai’

China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has reportedly been awarded contracts to supply electric car batteries to Germany’s Daimler and South Korea’s Hyundai Motor. 

Daimler’s procurement executive Sabine Angermann confirmed the firm’s involvement with CATL at a press conference in Stuttgart, according to Reuters.

Volkswagen ‘to buy EUR20bn of batteries from Asia’

Volkswagen has reportedly earmarked EUR20 billion ($25bn) to buy in lithium batteries for its electric vehicle business from China’s CATL, South Korea’s LG Chem and Samsung SDI.

China’s state Xinhua News Agency said the move was agreed by VW at its annual general meeting in Berlin— although BBB could not independently confirm the report.

Northvolt in battery materials deal with Nemaska

Swedish lithium-ion battery maker Northvolt has signed an agreement in principle for the supply of battery grade lithium hydroxide supply from Canada’s Nemaska Lithium.

Northvolt said it will receive up to 5,000— but not less than 3,500 metric tonnes per year— of lithium hydroxide on a take-or-pay basis for a five-year supply period.
