Lithium and cobalt facing “critical” supply issues, study says

Supplies of lithium and cobalt are set to become “seriously critical” as demand for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles and other applications rises, according to a new study.

Researchers at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm of Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology say cobalt-free battery technologies, “including post-lithium technologies based on non-critical elements such as sodium”, plus magnesium, zinc, calcium and aluminium, could ease the “dependency”.

Samsung SDI invests in Chile cathode project

South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI is part of an international consortium cleared to invest in developing battery materials facilities in Chile.

Samsung is among companies from South Korea and China expected to invest a total $754 million in the project, the Chilean Economic Development Agency (Corfo) confirmed.

BMW to sign 10-year cobalt and lithium supply contracts

Germany’s BMW Group is set to sign 10-year contracts to secure supplies of cobalt and lithium for production of electric vehicle batteries, the auto giant has told BBB.

A BMW spokesperson confirmed contracts would be signed with more than one supplier “in the near future”— but declined to name the firms involved.

Tesla mulls lithium investment in Chile

BBB has confirmed that Tesla is considering proposals to invest in lithium production in Chile— and that the carmaker could also support the launch of a battery cathodes production facility in the country.

The CEO of Chilean Economic Development Agency (Corfo), Eduardo Bitran (pictured), met Tesla bosses in the US recently to discuss a potential initial investment in Chilean lithium producer Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM), the agency told BBB this week.

Batteries plan to “alleviate” Fukushima grid challenges

Japan’s IHI Corporation has unveiled plans to launch a lithium battery storage project in the country’s Fukushima Prefecture.

IHI said the 500kW, 2.5MWh storage facility, incorporating LG Chem Li-ion battery racks, will be developed by US-based subsidiary IHI Energy Storage.

Chinese car firm signs lithium supply deal

Chinese car marker Great Wall Motor Co Ltd., said it has taken a 3.5% stake in Australian lithium miner Pilbara Minerals Ltd., to help secure supplies of a key mineral for its electric vehicle development plans.

Great Wall said it would take the equity interest in Pilbara for around AUD28 million ($22m) through its wholly-owned Hong Kong-registered subsidiary Billion Sunny Development Ltd.

Tianneng reports lead batteries sales hike

China’s Tianneng Power International Ltd said revenue for the first half of 2017 has been boosted by a 26.5% rise in lead battery sales, compared to the year-ago period.

In newly-released interim figures for the period up to 30 June, Tianneng posted revenue of more than CNY10 billion ($1.5b).

Battery storage rise to fuel metals demand, says World Bank

The global trend towards using clean energy systems such as battery storage technology will see “heightened demand” for minerals and metals including lead and lithium, according to a new World Bank report.

A shift to a low-carbon future “could result in opportunities for mineral-rich countries”, the report said. But it warned these nations must have “long-term strategies in place that enable them to make smart investment decisions”.

Advantage steps up lithium exploration in Argentina

Vancouver-based Advantage Lithium Corp., is speeding up exploration of lithium at its Cauchari joint venture (JV) project with Argentinian lithium producer, Orocobre, in the country’s Jujay Province.

Advantage said on 10 July a second drill rig had been installed at Cauchari, its flagship lithium asset.

Foxconn ‘plans major Li battery investments’ in China

Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Foxconn is reportedly planning to invest a total of CNY25 billion ($3.7 billion) in several projects as part of the development of a new energy battery R&D centre and production base in Kunshan, in China’s Jiangsu Province.

China’s state Xinhua News Agency said CNY8 billion ($1.2 billion) will be invested in the first phase, as agreed in a strategic cooperation agreement the company signed with the Kunshan government.
