Indian government unveils ‘battery mission’

The Indian government has approved a ‘National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage’ that aims to transform mobility in India.

The move will see the introduction of a “sustainable mobility ecosystem” and push ahead with the government’s ‘Make in India’ programme to boost domestic manufacturing”.

Under the initiative— approved by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s (pictured) cabinet— two phased manufacturing programmes (PMPs) will be established and will be valid for five years, up until 2024.

New Delhi plans ‘India first’ policy to protect battery industry

India’s government is planning a policy shake-up to “incentivise” battery manufacturing in the country, the country’s minister of state for power and new & renewable energy has told industry leaders. 

Raj Kumar Singh (pictured) told a meeting of Indian electric vehicle and battery manufacturing chiefs he could introduce “Make in India” legislation— to ensure only batteries produced in the country are used for government contracts related to the expanding EVs and energy storage market.
