Blockchain tech trialled in international projects

Dutch electricity transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT is working with German battery storage firm Sonnen, Amsterdam-based energy company Vandebron and IBM to launch pilot projects integrating storage batteries into the power supply system via blockchain technology.

Blockchain, a platform developed by IBM, ensures the verifiability and transparency of the transactions of the small-scale batteries. It is expected to simplify how suppliers of locally distributed flexible energy provide services to support power grid operators in the future.

Vanadium battery for SDG&E

Californian utility San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is planning a four-year vanadium redox flow (VRF) battery storage pilot project with Japan’s electronics manufacturer Sumitomo Electric (SEI).

The 2MW VRF battery storage system will be used to store solar energy sufficient to power up 1,000 households for up to four hours, according to SDG&E.

Grid-scale flywheel testing starts at pilot project

US flywheel firm Amber Kinetics and Hawaiian Electric Company (HEC) are set to test the capability of a flywheel system through a joint energy storage pilot project.

The project will use Amber Kinetics Amber Gen2© Model 25 steel flywheel system, at HEC’s Campbell Industrial Park generating station on O‘ahu, Hawaii.
