Hungary plant to feed 50,000 EVs

Samsung SDI says its new EV battery plant in Hungary will start production in 2018.

The 330,000sq m site in Goed, north of Budapest, is capable of producing batteries for 50,000 electric vehicles annually. Production is due to begin in the second quarter of next year.

India’s EV carmakers to set up battery factories?

The Indian government is considering incentivising domestic carmakers to set up their own lithium-ion battery plants in the country. The idea is to lower the cost of electric vehicles in India and make local cars more competitive.

It’s part of India’s plans to push the sales and production of electric vehicles in the country through schemes such as FAME-India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (hybrid &) Electric vehicles in India).

Thailand to become major Li-ion player?

Thai renewable energy company Energy Absolute is planning to develop a lithium-ion battery plant to rival Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, Bloomberg reports.

The factory, worth approximately $2.9 billion, will be built in one of four possible locations in Asia. Amorn Sapthaweekul (pictured), the company’s deputy chief executive officer, has said the company “would prefer to have the plant in Thailand” but without “clear government policy” they were also considering three other sites in Asia.

New York to fast-track gigafactory

New York to fast-track gigafactory

A 15GWh lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant is to be fast-tracked to development in New York State.

Over the past six months a consortium comprising New York-based Charge CCCV, C&D Assembly and Primet Precision Materials, and Australian firms Magnis Resources and Boston Energy and Innovation (BEI) have been inspecting potential facilities in the state for manufacturing lithium-ion batteries. The consortium says it will announce specific details on a chosen site “shortly”.

JCI plans two new battery plants in China

US-based battery giant Johnson Controls (JCI) plans to set up two new plants – with a combined annual capacity of 13.5 million batteries – in China.

JCI plans to ramp up its output of batteries to consolidate its leading position in the stop-start system sector in the country, the South China Morning Post reported.

RSR invests in cleaner smelting technology

Lead-acid battery recycler Revere Smelting & Refining Corporation (RSR) has installed a $55 million system to reduce metallic particle emissions at a third US plant.

The installment of the Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP) system brings emissions at its Middletown, New York, plant to around 25 pounds per year.
