Germany coughs up cash to host CATL gigafactory

Germany is dipping into an economic aid fund to support the construction of a battery cells factory in the country by Chinese lithium giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), BEST Battery Briefing can reveal.

CATL confirmed last week it would invest €240 million (US$280m) to build the electric vehicle (EV) battery plant at Erfurt, in the east-central state of Thüringen.

US states ramp up battery storage

Nevada and California have announced moves to expand battery energy storage facilities across the two states.

In Nevada, utility NV Energy is asking regulators to back plans to build six solar energy plants with three related BESS facilities with a combined storage capacity of 100 megawatts.

Primus Power flow batteries plant for South Africa?

Silicon Valley-based energy storage firm Primus Power could see its zinc bromide flow batteries also produced in South Africa— with the backing of one of the world’s biggest mining firms.

Johannesburg-based Anglo American Platinum (AAP), a key investor in privately held Primus, is considering supporting the project, BBB can reveal.

B&W MEGTEC contract for Italy’s “first” lithium cell plant

Babcock & Wilcox MEGTEC is to design and supply electrode coating equipment for the first lithium cells manufacturing plant to be built in Italy.

The Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises subsidiary was awarded the $15 million contract by Italy’s FAAM brand batteries producer FIB— part of Italy’s K R Energy Group.

BMZ China invests to expand battery operations

German lithium-ion battery developer and producer BMZ is relocating its China operations in Shenzhen to new premises in the city as it expands operations.

The group’s 100%-owned BMZ China subsidiary is investing around EUR7 million ($8.5m) in the new, 35,000 square metre facility— which is three times the size of the current plant, BBB has confirmed.

Korean lead-acid firm to open first US battery plant

South Korean lead-acid battery maker ATLASBX is investing $75 million to open its first manufacturing plant in the US.

Tennessee state governor Bill Haslam confirmed the firm expected to complete construction of the plant in Clarksville, Montgomery Country, by 2020.

Li-developer Tesson building 4GWh battery HQ in China

China’s lithium-ion automotive battery developer Tesson New Energy has started construction of a 4GWh battery assembly facility in the eastern city of Nanjing.

Tesson, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Tesson Holdings, said it plans to invest more than CNY5 billion ($790 million) in building the facility in the city’s Lishui district— that will be its headquarters for operations, production and R&D.

Enel partnership to build battery storage in Germany

Plans to build a 22MW lithium-ion battery storage plant online in Germany in April have been announced by the renewables subsidiary of Italian energy giant Enel.

Enel Green Power (EGP) has signed a contract with German wind developer Enertrag and Swiss battery maker Leclanché to build and operate the lithium-ion battery in Cremzow.

BYD ‘plans summer start for new battery plant’

Chinese battery giant BYD is reportedly set to start operations at a new CNY4 billion ($636 million) lithium-ion battery production plant in western China this June.

The first of three production lines expected to start rolling at the plant in Xining, Qinghai Province, will have an annual production capacity of 10GWh, according to China’s state Xinhua News Agency.

Umicore starts work on China materials plant

Belgium-based Umicore has broken ground in China for a new battery materials plant as part of a EUR360 million ($434m) expansion programme.

Umicore said the new plant in in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, would produce NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) cathode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to meet increasing demand for the electric vehicle market.
