Tesla’s battery mastermind quits as CTO after 16 years

The mastermind behind electric vehicle and energy storage OEM Tesla’s battery technology, Jeffrey Straubel, has quit as the US company’s chief technology officer as of 24 July.

The announcement was made during a conference call with analysts that Straubel (pictured) would step down from his executive role after 16 years.

$1500 for pioneering Tesla’s battery storage at home

US tech giant Tesla and Vermont-based electric services provider Green Mountain Power (GMP) have launched a home energy solution which initially unites Powerwall and Powerpack lithium-ion batteries into a single resource of shared energy.

GMP plans to install Powerpacks on utility land and deploy up to 2,000 Powerwall batteries to households within the service area to enable more renewable energy and increase grid efficiency.

Battery firms move in to Musk’s Powerwall territory

Competition in the home energy storage sector is heating up with several firms launching systems to rival the Powerwall, a second version of which has been slated for this summer despite the first one hardly having hit the shelves.

In December, German firm Sonnen launched its ‘SonnenCommunity’ ESS onto the US market, connecting households with battery-backed solar panels to store and use power on demand.

Australian firm installs country’s first Powerwall

An electricity utility firm has become the first to install a Tesla lithium-ion home energy storage unit at its Australian facility as the country gears itself up for a long-term strategy to manage network demand.

Queensland-based Energex has installed a Powerwall and another storage system from Californian company Sunverge at its Brisbane training facility as it investigates how to integrate solar batteries into the network with financial incentives for customers.
