Vanadium flow microgrid to service remote Scottish island

A grid-scale flow battery has passed the testing phase and is now set to harness renewable energy on a remote Scottish island.

The 1.68MWH energy storage system (ESS) by UK firm redT will serve as a microgrid when it’s integrated with the Scottish Isle of Gigha’s three wind turbines with a combined capacity of 775kW.

Flow battery partnership to target major ESS markets

US firm ViZn’s zinc and iron flow battery will be used in turnkey large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) following a deal with a vertically integrated utility-scale renewable energy firm.

The strategic partnership with US company Alpha Energy will see the Texas-based firm’s technology used for large behind-the-meter, grid-edge and utility-scale front-of-the-meter applications.

The man charged with restructuring renewable energy firm Sunedison following chapter 11 bankruptcy has been made its new chief executive officer.

John S. Dubel started as CEO at the California, US, based company on June 22, after serving as its chief restructuring officer since April, a role he will continue.

Megawatt lithium-ion micro-grid to harness Azores renewable energy

Perched in the middle of the Atlantic, the Azores is the perfect place to use lithium-ion batteries to harness the renewable energy that surrounds the islands.

A 1MW solar photovoltaic power plant and a 3.2 MWh lithium-ion Younicos-designed microgrid system have been installed on the Azorean island of Graciosa to harness wind and sun.

A 4.5 MW wind park is currently under construction. Swiss company Leclanché provided the battery energy storage system.

The system was viewed recently by the Prime Minister of Portugal, Doctor António Costa, as well as the President of the Azorean Government, Doctor Vasco Cordeiro, and other high-level country officials.

The “island-mode” capability of the project’s intelligent battery system will enable up to 100% spontaneous renewable energy generation.

US progam launched to test lithium-ion ability to utilise renewable energy

Ideal Power has partnered with Austin Energy in a US federally-funded research program to investigate the coupling of lithium-ion batteries to renewable energy sources.

The Austin Energy led "Sustainable and Holistic Integration of Energy Storage and Solar PV" (SHINES) program is partially funded by $4.3 million of U.S. Department of Energy's SunShot program money.

Austin Energy will pair Ideal Power's Grid Resilient 125kW and 30kW Power Conversion systems with lithium-ion batteries into commercial, behind-the-meter projects in 2016.

Austin Energy will also work with Ideal Power and its consortium partners to create a template for other regions to maximize PV penetration and provide grid stability by utilizing energy storage in areas where high levels of PV are integrated with the grid.

"We look forward to working with Ideal Power on this innovative project that will ultimately allow Austin Energy to support our aggressive renewable energy goals," said Karl Popham, Austin Energy Manager of Emerging Technologies and Electric Vehicles.

Polish renewable energy firm NOVAVIS Spółka Akcyjna has signed a mutli-partner Joint Venture agreement to establish a vanadium redox flow battery production plant.

The JV will manufacture energy storage systems using the technology under the banner Storion Energy Poland.

UK gets first sodium-ion ESS installed

A small-scale renewable energy sodium-ion battery has been installed for the first time on UK shores by English energy storage firm Wattstor.

Wattstor, who specialise in the design and supply of energy storage systems, was asked to put together a bespoke stationary energy storage system for the 25kWh battery, which was manufactured by US Company Aquion.

Blattner Energy completes 20MW Li-ion ESS

US power generation contractor and renewable energy company Blattner Energy has completed construction of a 20MW lithium-ion battery storage project.

The Lee/DeKalb energy storage system (ESS) in Illinois, US, is now providing the regional transmission organisation, PJM Interconnection, with the frequency regulation support needed for the area.

The project included Greensmith Energy Management Systems as the integrator of eight containers, 10 feet by 40 feet in size, housing 2.5MW of LG Chem lithium-ion batteries each.

Blattner Energy engineered the system, procured the technology and equipment, oversaw the installation and interconnection of the system technology, as well as completing the testing and start-up activities.

Stephen Jones, director of solar, Blattner Energy, said: “Battery storage will be a key technology in supporting the stability of our grid and the intermittency of some renewable generation sources.”

100MW goal begins with Europe’s biggest Li-ion ESS

Europe's biggest electricity storage battery using a 10MW lithium-ion battery array is being built in Northern Ireland (NI).

Plans to provide an extra 250MW of capacity - enough to power 160,000 homes - are in the advanced stages at a site next to Kilroot Power Station.

Beacon Power output to double

Beacon Power flywheel plant

Energy storage company Beacon Power has estimated that it will build 40MW of energy storage systems by the end of 2015.

Beacon Power CEO Barry Britt said in a Bloomberg interview that the demand for flywheel storage will double over the next years due to the increase of renewable power plants that raise the need for grid stabilising.
