Scientists warn EU against restrictions on lead

Fri, 03/29/2019 - 08:45 -- John Shepherd

Top EU scientists have warned that proposals to restrict the use of lead in the EU risk jeopardising the bloc’s plans to expand energy storage and clean technologies.

The scientists have criticised “ill-judged” attempts to clamp down on lead, after industry leaders said thousands of battery jobs risked being axed in Europe and ‘exported’ to competitors if the European Commission backed moves for an in-effect ban on the use of four lead compounds.

BEST Battery Briefing understands the Commission is advising EU states against adding lead monoxide, lead tetroxide, pentalead tetraoxide sulfate and tetralead trioxide sulfate to Europe’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) authorisation list.

Wed, 05/09/2018 - 09:30 -- Xuan Zhong
Lithium might dominate ‘transportation batteries’ by 2022.

Lead industry chiefs have been given their strongest warning yet that lithium is eating into the worldwide market for transportation batteries— and with a voracious appetite.

In an unprecedented move in Battery Council International’s five-year Starter lighting and Ignition (SLI ) batteries forecast, industry veteran Ray Kubis (pictured) last week included an impact assessment of lithium-ion  on the former 100% lead-acid market.

US co-ops ‘cashing in on energy storage’

The value of the US battery storage market could grow from $300 million a year to as much as $3 billion by 2020— adding up to rich pickings for electricity distribution cooperatives, according to a new report.

Capital costs for battery systems could fall below $300 per kilowatt hour this year as “significant expansion” boost economies of scale for the manufacture of cells and battery packs, said the report by national rural industries finance institution CoBank.

Lead’s multi-billion-dollar boost for US economy

Mon, 02/05/2018 - 12:01 -- John Shepherd
Lead’s multi-billion-dollar boost for US economy

The US lead battery industry contributed more than $28 billion of total economic output to the national economy in 2016, a new study has revealed.

In addition, the jobs of more than 95,000 US workers depended on lead batteries, according to the study— Economic Contribution of the US Lead Battery Industry— prepared by the Economic Development Research Group for Battery Council International (BCI) and Essential Energy Everyday.
