Australia adopts its first standards to ensure safe delivery of energy storage projects

Australia’s first rules governing the safe installation of energy storage systems were introduced on 11 October, five years after consultation on the guidelines first began.

Non-profit standards organisation Standards Australia has published AS/NZS 5139:2019, Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment.

Green light for Australia battery storage standard

New rules aimed at preventing “high risk and dodgy” battery storage systems being installed in homes and businesses in Australia have been backed by regulators.

The Clean Energy Council (CEC) said the expected introduction of a new standard, which follows a five-year consultation period, was “a major win for a safe and credible battery industry and puts an end to the risk from poor quality battery installations in Australia”.

Draft Australia home storage fire-risk rules dropped

Regulators in Australia have dropped initial proposals that could have banned the introduction of on-site lithium-ion battery storage in homes.

The potential ban came to light earlier this year when Standards Australia launched consultations into draft fire safety regulations for the use of lithium-based batteries.

Australia issues draft home storage fire-risk rules

Proposed regulations in Australia that would prioritise fire safety for the use of lithium-based batteries inside homes have been opened to consultation.

The draft regulations by Standards Australia follow reports that emerged earlier this year that new guidelines could ban the introduction of on-site lithium-ion battery storage in homes.
