China battery tariffs threat ‘would hit US storage plans’

Proposed tariffs on Chinese lithium-ion batteries and related equipment would have “an immediate and adverse effect on grid energy storage deployments”, US leaders have been warned.

President Donald Trump has threatened to slap tariffs on a further $300 billion worth of Chinese exports to the US if Chinese president Xi Jinping does not meet him at the G20 summit of world leaders in Japan later this month.

Regulators boost for BESS in US power markets

Electricity regulators in the US have scrapped measures that prevented energy storage from competing in the country’s wholesale power markets.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) voted on 15 February to approve a new rule that allows grid operators to use technologies including batteries and flywheel systems to dispatch power, set energy prices and offer capacity, energy and ancillary services.

Regulators reject Trump subsidies bid for coal over energy storage

Electricity regulators in the US have rejected proposals by the Trump administration to “subsidise” struggling coal-fired and nuclear plants over support for developing battery storage technologies.

The US energy department had proposed a rule that would increase aid for coal and nuclear to ensure “grid resiliency”— in line with President Donald Trump’s pre-election pledge to ‘reopen mines and bring back coal’.

Massachusetts green light for energy storage plan

Massachusetts green light for energy storage plan

The US state of Massachusetts has formally set a 200 MWh energy storage target to be achieved by 2020 – supported by a $10 million commitment to study, develop and encourage storage deployment.

The target, set by the state’s Department of Energy Resources (DOER), follows last year’s signing of bipartisan “energy diversification” legislation by state governor Charlie Baker (pictured).
