Report says ‘lucky country’ lithium key for batteries in 2019

Mon, 02/04/2019 - 00:00 -- John Shepherd

“Key sources” of new lithium-ion for the battery materials market in 2019 will again come from Australia, say market analysts.

An additional 60 kilotonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) output will come from mines in the so-called ‘lucky country’, according to metal and materials research consultancy Wood Mackenzie.

Australia has shown its ability to “fast-track spodumene operations in recent years through a combination of a benign investment environment, technical expertise and existing infrastructure”, Wood Mackenzie said.

Tesla PowerBank

In a “first” for Australia, a 105kW/420kWh Tesla PowerBank will be installed to provide 52 homes with shared access to energy storage for a 24-month trial.

The 52 shares of the community battery in Mandurah, Western Australia— which will be jointly owned and operated by Western Power and Synergy— sold in less than two weeks.

Each of the customers will be allocated a maximum of 8kWh of virtual storage— at the cost of AUD1 (US$0.72) per day— which they will use to store energy from solar panels during the day, and drawn down the power to avoid evening peak charge periods.

Australia urged to take on Asia in battery hub bid

Mining firms have unveiled a blueprint they say could transform Australia into a global battery development hub— and grab a multi-billion-dollar slice of the “lithium value chain”.

A new report from Australia’s Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) calls on the federal government to declare battery minerals processing an “industry priority”— and use tax breaks and other incentives to entice global industry giants to the country to kick-start a domestic battery industry.
