Doubt over loan deal for South Australia mega-battery project

Plans for a 120MW battery storage project in South Australia could be in doubt— with a pre-election loan for the scheme awarded by the outgoing state government possibly under review by the new administration.

Former state premier Jay Weatherill approved the AUD10 million loan for the project by Australia’s ZEN Energy— part of the GFG Alliance business empire of British billionaire Sanjeev Gupta (pictured)— hours before Weatherill’s Labor Party lost power on 17 March to the opposition Liberals.

UK-based GFG Alliance has declined to comment on reports that its billionaire boss is in talks to use a newly acquired energy storage and solar business to power a new electric vehicle plant in Australia.

Local media in South Australia say GFG chairman, Sanjeev Gupta (pictured), is discussing proposals to set up an EV production line at part of a former Holden car factory in the state.

Another 100MW lithium battery for South Australia

Australian energy company ZEN Energy has approved a 1GW renewable energy plan to meet industrial needs of South Australia, including a 100MWh lithium-ion battery facility at Port Augusta.

The company confirmed the battery will be built near the now closed Northern Power Station, and will be plugged into the 275kV Davenport grid connection. The battery itself is said to cost around AUD100 million ($77m) and would be operational in the first quarter of 2019.
