Statera Energy has received planning approval for Culham Storage, a 500MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Oxfordshire.
Positioned near National Grid’s Culham substation and the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s campus, the site is designed to strengthen Britain’s energy security and decarbonise its electricity grid.
The BESS will stabilise supply by balancing intermittent renewable generation – supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions and enabling reliable, low-carbon energy delivery. Its proximity to the Culham Campus also supports the UK’s first AI Growth Zone and fusion innovation hub, driving regional development and advanced technology.
Statera is prioritising environmental enhancement as part of the development. With 16 hectares allocated for new woodland and grassland habitats, the Culham Storage BESS will regenerate a registered park and garden, delivering an estimated 62% biodiversity net gain.
Oliver Troup, development lead at Statera Energy, commented, “This 500MW BESS at Culham will play an important role in helping the UK achieve its Clean Power 2030 targets. Its strategic placement and significant capacity will enable us to more effectively manage the intermittent nature of renewable energy, boosting local grid stability and national energy security. We will continue to work closely with our partners at UKAEA and NGET to deliver this essential project responsibly and effectively.”
