An adamant Menachem Anderman, doyen of battery gurus world wide, has told Best Battery Briefing he saw no place for lead-acid technology in future electrified vehicles.
“It’s not what I think, it’s what the car companies are telling me,” Dr Anderman said in a Q&A session at the Detroit Advanced automotive battery conference.
Anderman’s comments come as the conference organisers, Cambridge Enertech, introduced a lead technology track at the meeting for the first time alongside a fuel cell track.
The latter component is perhaps in response to Toyota’s bold environmental goals, which promise zero tailpipe emissions within a decade— from fuel cells.
Anderman’s comments were in part backed by John German, a senior fellow with the International Council on Clean Transportation— also known as “the man who exposed Volkswagen”.
German said that 48-volt technology would not meet future emissions standards. The 48-volt space has been viewed by the lead-acid world as an opportunity for its longstanding technology.
