Swiss technology firm ABB is making lithium-ion energy storage systems for mobility applications at a new production facility in Baden, Switzerland.
The systems will be used in railway, trollybus, e-bus and e-truck applications in Swiss cities including Zürich, Lausanne and Fribourg.
The new facility will enable ABB to supply the entire power train including energy storage solutions from a single source, said Robert Itschner, CEO of ABB Switzerland.
Battery cells will be assembled into standardised modules, which will then be combined into systems and configured according to the specific application.
Assembly will be by the company’s robots, with one placing the battery cells in the module housing and another joining them using a laser welding process.
Baden was selected as the production location because of its proximity to the ABB Center of Excellence for Traction Converters in Turgi and to the ABB Corporate Research Center in Dättwil.
