Ace Green Recycling, the Singapore/US-based lead-acid and lithium battery recycling company, has partnered with an African electric vehicle (EV) company, Spiro, to exclusively recycle its EV batteries.
The scheme will mean end-of-life EV batteries and battery manufacturing waste from Spiro will be sent only to Ace Green facilities to be recycled, it said.
Ace Green recycling centres will be co-located near Spiro’s collection hubs in support of this partnership, it said.
These facilities would use Ace Green’s proprietary technology to recycle lithium-ion and lithium-ferro-phosphate (LFP) batteries, it said. Ace Green claims its facilities are scope 1 emissions free.
The scheme supports a circular economy for batteries, emphasising safe handling and recycling, it said.
Spiro, based in Nairobi, Kenya, claims to be Africa’s largest EV company. It said it has deployed more than 22,000 e-bikes with battery swapping and home charging features.
Ace Green hopes it will be able to support the growth of Spiro as its operations are scaled up across Africa, it said.
Kaushik Burman, CEO of Spiro, said: “As Spiro leads the decarbonisation of Africa’s transportation sector, partnering with Ace will further accelerate this progress in a sustainable and responsible manner.
“This collaboration reinforces our commitment to SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), while building a circular value chain that reduces carbon emissions and supports local economic development.”
Nishchay Chadha, CEO of Ace, said: “Spiro is a pioneer in Africa when it comes to electrifying its transportation sector, and we look forward to supporting its continued growth with our technology and services. This agreement serves as the foray for Ace in the African market as we continue to roll out our global deployment strategy.”
