US battery recycler ACE Green Recycling and Tabono Investments, a South African investment company with experience in mining, logistics and recycling, said they formed a joint venture. It will build and operate two battery recycling facilities in South Africa.
Tabono co-founder Reon Barnard said: “Without dedicated recycling facilities, the country is losing valuable materials like lithium and cobalt. We plan to take up this opportunity.”
The facilities will separately process and recycle lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries utilising ACE’s proprietary technology. Both recycling facilities will be greenfield projects.
Under the new structure, ACE will have 51% ownership and Tabono 49%.
