ADS-TEC Energy is supplying two battery energy storage containers with a combined capacity of 10MWh and an output of 4.8MW to Murauer Stadtwerke in Austria, in a project designed to strengthen regional energy resilience and enable operation during grid outages.
The systems will be installed at an existing hydropower plant in Murau and will support peak shaving, grid stabilisation and the integration of locally generated renewable electricity from hydropower and photovoltaic systems. Commissioning is scheduled for summer 2026.
A key feature of the installation is its ability to operate in island mode. In the event of a failure of the public grid, the battery system can establish a stable electrical island within milliseconds by providing voltage and frequency reference signals. The hydropower plant then synchronises automatically and resumes generation, while the battery system balances fluctuations and absorbs excess energy to maintain stable operation.
Günther Staber, managing director of Murauer Stadtwerke, said: “This project is an important step towards strengthening the long-term security of our regional energy supply. Combining hydropower with a grid-forming battery storage system increases the resilience of our network while providing greater operational flexibility.
ADS-TEC more than just a component supplier

ADS-TEC Energy is providing a fully integrated, skid-mounted system comprising battery storage, power conversion equipment, transformers and energy management technology. The company is also responsible for integrating the storage system into the utility’s existing infrastructure.

The battery storage project forms part of a broader investment programme by Murauer Stadtwerke aimed at reinforcing regional energy infrastructure. Alongside expansion of the electricity network, the utility is investing in additional hydropower capacity through the new Murau West hydroelectric plant, which is expected to provide electricity for around 4,300 households.
The project adds to ADS-TEC Energy’s growing portfolio of utility-scale battery systems in Germany and Austria, reflecting increasing demand from municipal utilities for storage assets that can provide both grid services and enhanced energy security.
