ADS-TEC Energy has announced plans to build one of the world’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) in southern Germany.
The facility will deliver 1GW of output and store approximately 2GWh of energy – enough to power around 250,000 single-family homes daily.
Development began nine months ago and has already received unanimous approval from the local city council, along with a positive grid connection assessment from the transmission system operator. The company aims to finalise development and financing by mid-2026, with commissioning expected in 2029, pending regulatory approval.
The BESS will be complemented by large-scale solar installations in the double-digit megawatt peak (MWp) range, enhancing both sustainability and economic performance. ADS-TEC Energy will manage the full lifecycle of the project, leveraging over 15 years of expertise in lithium-ion storage and grid-connected frequency regulation plants.
“This project represents a turning point for our company,” said Thomas Speidel, CEO and founder. “This is an incredible flagship project for critical infrastructure, developed and operated by ADS-TEC Energy”
Financially, the project is expected to generate substantial returns. Based on 2024 market data, a similar facility could yield over €230 million annually, tapping into Europe’s wholesale energy and capacity markets.
